Basseterre, ST KITTS (KYSS) — Former Attorney General of St. Kitts and Nevis, Honourable Patrice Nisbett, says that due to the high level of importance placed on good governance in the federation, the Public Accounts Committee must be able to function as it had done for half a century.
In his address to the National Assembly last week, Nisbett highlighted the importance of the Public Accounts Committee being able to “follow the money” in order to safeguard against the misappropriation of public funds.
Mr. Nisbett also added his voice to his fellow opposition members who raised concerns over the severe limitations to the Public Accounts Committee’s functions as detailed in the PAC Bill 2017.
The parliamentarian pointed out that the establishment of the parliamentary standing orders relating to the PAC did not precede the establishment of the Director of Audit’s position in the constitution.
This he says is evidence that the PAC’s work goes beyond the examinations which produce the Director of Audit’s report.
