KONRIS MAYNARD ACCUSES TEAM UNITY GOVERNMENT OF TAMPERING WITH THE ELECTORAL SYSTEM
5th April 2018
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (KYSS FM) – Elected representative for Constituency Number Three, Hon. Konris Maynard, has accused the Dr. Timothy Harris-led government of tampering with the electoral system to gain a political advantage instead of working to genuinely win the hearts and minds of voters.
Maynard made the argument in reaction to a proposed amendment to the National Assembly Elections Act in which the government intends change the requirements for voter registration by replacing the expression ‘ordinarily resident on the registration date’ to “ordinarily resident for at least six months before the registration date’.
Once passed, the new law would exclude persons who have not resided in St. Kitts and Nevis for at least six months from registering to vote.
This includes residents, non-nationals persons working or training in the Federation, students and many others.
The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party is against this action by the government, says Hon. Maynard, noting that persons must be given the right to exercise their franchise.
