BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – Rumors abound that money has been misappropriated by a department within the Ministry of National Security. This comes close on the heels of denials by sources close to the matter that there is a Police investigation into the matter.
The story first broke a week ago and when the Police were asked to authenticate the claim, the official response was “note that the Police are not investigating such a matter and I cannot speak to the truthfulness of the article.”
Reliable sources have disclosed, however, that almost $90,000 has been embezzled from the Fire Department in an elaborate scheme that began in 2015 and lasted until mid 2018.
The scheme sparked red flags when it became evident that money collection methods contrasted with standardized treasury procedures.
Insider sources have further revealed that every issued cheque now under scrutiny was generated from the same source and the descriptions for payments were unusually vague.
The news about the embezzlement scheme has rattled citizens as it comes at a time when Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris and his Team Unity have underscored the need for accountability in government.
It also came days after the government disclosed that there was an internal investigation underway to determine whether the Director of the People Empowerment Programme (PEP)- now STEP- under the Labour administration allegedly misappropriated funds.
