Basseterre, St. Ktts. November 27, 2018. – A young mother, Devoncel Dolphin, and her two infants- a three year old and a six week old child- are homeless after fire gutted their one bedroom home, at Central Thibou Avenue, and completely destroyed it.
Since the disaster on November 26, the small family has been staying with a close family friend. However, there is much uncertainty as to what the future holds. Dolphin revealed that she has attempted to reach out to her area’s government representative but she has been unsuccessful so far.
Fire chief Everette O’Garro disclosed that the Basseterre Unit of the St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services responded to the call at about 1:17 on the Monday and were able to fully control the blaze after 75 minutes. Everything was completely destroyed, however.
Investigations are ongoing into the origin of the fire. Several residents in the area have indicated that there have been concerns of low voltage in recent times and further stated that workers from the St. Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC) were in the area.
Efforts to confirm this with SKELEC were unsuccessful.
The Central Thibou Avenue fire came one day after fire destroyed another residence in Pond’s Extension.
