BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (KYSS FM) – Hon. Konris Maynard has joined the many others who have been vocal in demanding that the Team Unity government release the payments owed to those whose participation and services made the 2017/2018 Carnival celebrations a success.
This call, Hon. Maynard said is overdue, as it is almost four months since the end of the carnival celebrations.
To date, the Dr. Timothy Harris-led government has failed to disburse funds owed to the carnival winners, participants, vendors and other stakeholders.
On several occasions over the last months, the Carnival Committee, directed by Chairman Noah Mills and Minister of Culture, Deputy Prime Minister Shawn Richards, have communicated dates for a prize-giving ceremony only to cancel the event soon after.
Commenting on the matter, Hon. Richards has indicated that blame for the delay is due to the Cabinet and the constant lag of those involved.
The minister continued, while he had initially indicated payments would likely be made by the end of March, he had to wait for Cabinet to approve the submission of the money.
Although the funds have now been approved, according to the Minister, other issues inhibit the payout.
In a radio interview earlier this week, Hon. Richards added that, “Cabinet approved the submission in March and the Ministry of Finance was given the go-ahead to release the funds to the National Carnival Committee, however, the prize giving ceremony had to be put off due to the Easter weekend holidays, and then there were other big events.”
He also noted that the persons required to sign the cheques are not on the island and he too would also be traveling shortly.
