Leader of the Opposition St. Kitts Nevis Labour Party, Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas has echoed the concerns of several economic minded citizens, suggesting that there are heavy cost overruns in the construction of the second cruise pier at Port Zante.
Douglas made his comments during his weekly “Ask the Leader” programme, on April 2.
“Recently we have been informed that there are serious cost overrun in the construction of the second pier amounting into millions of dollars, although the pier is still far from being completion. Millions of dollars in overrun yet the pier is far from being completed,” the opposition leader said.
However, Dr Douglas gave no further details behind the allegations.
The second cruise pier was projected to cost US$ 48 million. The St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank is providing the bulk of the financing, with $34 million. The Social Security Board providing $7 million while the SIDF and TDC are contributing $5 and $2 million, respectively.
The financing agencies inked their commitment to the construction of the docking facility, during a signing ceremony at Port Zante, on February 26, 2018 and construction began about ten months ago.
Efforts to get an official response from the government in relation to the allegations have not been successful.
The second cruise pier is expected to be completed in September 2019.
