OPPOSITION LEADER SAYS HE TAKES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR NON-APPOINTMENT OF THE PAC OVER THE PAST 30 MONTHS
Date: 14th June, 2017
Basseterre, ST KITTS (KYSS) — Leader of the opposition, Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas has said he will not take responsibility for the government’s thirty month failure to establish the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the St. Kitts-Nevis National Assembly.
In a personal statement to the National Assembly, Dr. Douglas declared that it was most peculiar that the leader of the opposition is now being charged with responsibility for assembling the Public Accounts Committee.
Dr. Douglas continued that he received a letter on May 22nd from the Office of the Prime Minister, requesting that as leader of the opposition, he provide the names of those who will serve on the Committee from among his ranks.
He noted that from the start of the new session of the national assembly following the February 16th, 2015 general elections, the opposition has been pleading for the Public Accounts Committee to be established.
Dr Douglas stated unequivocally that, having implored the government and the Speakers of the house to commission the Public Accounts Committee, he would not accept any responsibility for the government’s failure to take action on this matter.
