Police accused of brutality against wrong person after officer drops weapon
Police in Nevis are being accused of physically assaulting a male after he was mistakenly identified as the culprit who grabbed a firearm that was dropped by a Police officer. The weapon has since been recovered by authorities.
Police have confirmed that there was an incident in Nevis but no additional details have been given.
The condition of the alleged victim is not known.
It is being contended that an officer dropped his service weapon on Friday evening last, May 17. The circumstances surrounding how he dropped the firearm are not yet clear.
Sources further indicate that video footage showed an unidentified person picking up the firearm.
One male was sought out and allegedly beaten by officers, who believed that he was the culprit grabbed up the service weapon but apparently he was not the person who retrieved the gun off the ground, multiple sources have relayed to this media house.
Authorities have promised to provide more details on the incident shortly.
The incident happened on the same evening that a licensed firearm holder had his gun wrestled from him during an altercation with several persons in the Parray’s Village area, in St. Peter’s.
That gun was also found and one person is in custody in relation to the matter.
