Police Commissioners from St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Maarten and Anguilla have underscored the need for a concerted approach to crime fighting in the immediate region.
The urgency for a unified approach was highlighted during a meeting earlier today, February 25.
In addition to the Police Commissioners, senior officials from the Ministry of National Security, including the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security and the National Security Advisor, other members of the Police High Command and other national security stakeholders from delegations from St. Maarten and Anguilla attended the meeting.
Representatives from the British National Crime Agency and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency made presentations to attendees, which also included prosecutors, the Head of the Criminal Investigation Department, as well as Coast Guard and Immigration personnel. St. Kitts’ Head of Immigration and his Deputy along with the Acting Comptroller of Customs and the leadership of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force and Coast Guard were also participants.
They discussed crime trends in all three territories. Border security, trafficking, immigration issues and best practices on crime were tabled and a framework for moving forward was created, with the intention of overcoming the challenges through greater cooperation.
