Basseterre, ST KITTS (KYSS) – The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party’s Senator Nigel Carty, believes that the Team Unity administration is bent on keeping the public ignorant.
He was making direct reference to the new limitations placed on the functions of the Public Accounts Committee as outlined in the recently passed Public Accounts Committee Bill 2017.
Under the act, the PAC’s ability to delve into the government’s use of public funds is now restricted to an examination of the report generated by the Director of Audit.
During his presentation on the Public Accounts Committee Bill 2017, Senator Carty explained the previous functions of the Public Accounts Committee as laid out in the National Assembly Elections Act.
He proclaimed that it is unprecedented anywhere in the world that a PAC’s right to execute detailed examinations of the government accounts has been disallowed
The Senator explained that for more than half a century, the PAC had been able to bring a thorough account of government spending to the public.
The opposition Senator lamented that in 2017, the government of St Kitts-Nevis has displayed a “constant derogation of transparency and democracy.”
