Basseterre, ST KITTS (KYSS) — Former Prime Minister, Right Honourable Dr Denzil Douglas, has demanded to know who within the Team Unity Administration knew about the unethical testing of an experimental herpes vaccine in the federation in 2016.
On his radio programme Ask the Leader,Dr. Douglas reminded his audience that this is the second medical ethics scandal to have hit St. Kitts and Nevis in the last two years.
He also sought to find out who knew of the experiments, particularly since then chief medical officer, Dr Patrick Martin, confirmed that he was unaware that any research, testing or experiments were being carried out.
Dr. Douglas, whose professional background is in medicine, shared his puzzlement over the complete disregard for the country’s legislative safeguards regarding medical research and testing, particularly as it was confirmed that the vaccine, which was in the first phase of testing did not receive approval from the US Food and Drug Administration or an institutional review board.
Additionally, the opposition leader inquired about the logistical arrangements that went into coordinating the clandestine experiments, many of which he confirmed could not have been made without the government’s knowledge.
He also wanted to know whether or not Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, had received donations from the persons who orchestrated and financed the experiment.
